Achilles 9 metre - For Sale
Believed to have been first launched in 1978 by her original owner, who had completed her from a kit made up by the designer and moulder, Chris Butler, her second owner (Ian Wallace), has had to reluctantly retire from sailing and now seek a successor. Lying at Ardoran Marine's yard close to Oban, she was acquired in 2006 on the Hamble and full advantage was taken of the local expertise to re-engine and re-rig her, improve her fit-out and do the cosmetics. In the course of her delivery voyage to Oban (via the Canaries, the Mediterranean and the Aegean) over the next six years, the main improvements were renewal of the mainsail and genoa. The new engine with 3-blade feathering propeller was lightly used, and still has only recorded 1028 hours including subsequent use in Argyll waters over several seasons. The roller-reefing genoa is mounted on a Rotostay E gear; the fully-battened main reefs and stows around the boom. There is the standard Henderson bilge pump in the port cockpit locker with a selectable additional intake to drain the locker itself, and a 20W solar panel on the hatch garage to maintain battery charge. A Hydrovane wind vane is mounted on the transom.
2 main anchors, one with 60m calibrated chain, 2-burner-and-oven gas cooker supplied by twin Camping Gaz cylinders, 6 berths in all, sea toilet, spares, etc, etc. A very small Plastimo inflatable dinghy is optional. A much fuller list can be perused at:- www.spearhead.me.uk/A9m.htm
Achilles 24 - For Sale
First launched in March 1973 for the present owner (Ian Wallace), she is lying in Oban on her own 4-wheel trailer which is sadly no longer roadworthy. After 10 seasons out of use while I cruised elsewhere in an Achilles 9 metre, I've returned with the bigger boat and now reluctantly decided it's time for me to give up sailing altogether! Accordingly, a new enthusiastic owner is sought.
Headroom inside is very limited 4 feet 6 inches (1.37m), but the main berths were made extra long to fit the owner, which is one reason why I have been loathe to part with her. She used to be very competitive in the West Coast handicap racing and her name appears on most relevant trophies from Oban SC, West Highland Week and other regattas. Sh4e has cruised extensively also, between the Canaries and Stornoway, usually single handed. The fully-battened main reefs and stows around the boom. There is a standard Henderson bilge pump near the tiller and an additional one inside under the cabin sole on the same pipe, and solar panels to maintain battery charge. A wind vane - home built about 1975 to the owner's back-of-an-envelope design - works surprisingly well once set up correctly in all winds above Beaufort 1.
In accordance with current ecological considerations, her entire underwater area is sheathed in cupro-nickel metal, so that conventional anti-fouling should not be required for decades. Spare patching material is included. A lifting chain and stainless guys are included for single-point lifting/launching by crane. She carries a 4hp Yamaha 2-stroke long shaft outboard engine, which mounts on a block through the cockpit floor when needed, and gives a good balance between weight and economy, making about 5 knots if becalmed. When not in use, the entire engine and block show under the cockpit atop a plywood floor, which protects the water tank below.
2 main anchors, Stowe marine log, Seafarer sounder, Optimum paraffin 2-burner cooker, 4 berths in all, SL 400 sea toilet, extensive sail wardrove, spares, etc, etc. An unused Icom VHF, still in its box and never fitted, is available too.
A robustly built, well sorted, easily handled boat offering a wide range of possibilities. Full documentation. Possible Oban mooring. Phone contact: 07876 338727
